- Bilingual Spanish/English reading, speaking, translating and writing.
- Two year associate degree preferred.
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
- Excellent human relations skills with desire to interact with parents, students, staff, and the public.
- Ability to provide training to staff and parents regarding program requirements, special services, and computer processes, etc.
- Commitment and discretion to maintain confidentiality.
Essential Functions – 50%
- Maintain positive communication with Migrant Education Program (MEP) families, state recruiters, district personnel and community agencies.
- Provide services to MEP families and enable children of migrant families to access district services.
- Assist families to acclimate to new environment.
- Organize and deliver Literacy Packets and educational materials to Migrant Families and Out of School Youth (OSY) as needed.
- Inform students and parents/guardians of available services and act as a liaison with state recruiters, community agencies and social service agencies to facilitate assistance.
- Provide transportation for families in case of doctor appointments, emergency, or other transportation needs.
- Be knowledgeable of community social services and family support agencies in order to provide appropriate referral information to individuals and/or families.
- Make referrals to appropriate service agencies.
- Notify state recruitment office of potential migrant families in the community.
- Maintain student enrollment, transfer, and withdrawal information; process all program data accurately.
- Work with Kansas State Migrant Department to maintain program requirements and records.
- Be knowledgeable of local, state, and /or federal regulations concerning Title I &ESL/Migrant programs.
- Disseminate MEP information to potential qualifying families and children and to discuss the MEP program knowledgeably.
- Maintain positive communication with the beef packing plants and other employers, providing informational meetings, family specific meetings, and instruction about district programs at monthly plant meetings.
- Help administer assessments as required.
- Recruit families to the Migrant Program by completing COE Form on Families.
General Responsibilities – 50%
- Assist with the planning and coordination of special programs and activities.
- Provide for parent planning and involvement within individual schools as well as district-wide meetings.
- Seek input from Parent Advisory Council concerning the local migrant education plan.
- Publicize appropriate program news and events.
- Solicit donations for door prizes for parent meetings.
- Serve as an interpreter as required.
- Read through original material and rewrite in the target language, ensuring that the meaning of the text is retained.
- Use specialist dictionaries, thesauruses and reference books to find the closest equivalents for terminology and words used. Research education phraseology to find the correct translation and proofread and translated versions of text.
- Provide clients with a grammatical, well-expressed final version of the translated text, usually as a wordprocessed document. Community Liaison
- Compose, type, and copy correspondence, reports, memos, records, and other materials; send FAX reports as required.
- Use the internet and email as research tools throughout the translation process.
- Retain and develop knowledge of educational terms.
- Attend evening functions.
- Create open communication with parents.
- Screen visitors and telephone calls directing them to the appropriate person/department.
- Keep accurate student data records in Skyward or other programs as required.
- React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
- Attend workshops, in-service meetings, MEP training sessions sponsored by the state, or state-wide parent meetings each school year.
- Keep accurate records of all meetings including agendas, minutes, and attendance reports.
- Travel when necessary and keep appropriate documentation logs.
- Understand all federal guidelines as they pertain to the eligibility of children and provision of services for the Migrant Education Program.
- Work with local district personnel towards achieving the goals of the state in providing applicable services to eligible MEP children.
- Contact public and private community agencies associated with serving migrant populations as needed.
- Assist with enrollment of children including administering assessments necessary for kindergarten enrollment.
- Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Blood borne Pathogens. Exposure Control Plan.
- Support the value of an education.
- Support the philosophy and mission of USD 443.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of ESL/Migrant Program or Administrative Staff.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
- Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
- Requires little physical exertion beyond walking or climbing stairs.
- Occasionally requires a small amount of lifting.
- Requires both indoor and outdoor work with some travel to homes and/or businesses.
