LWVWA Takes Stand Against Three Ballot Initiatives
The League of Women Voters of Washington announces its opposition to three initiatives that will appear on the November ballot:
- Initiative 2109, Repeal Capital Gains Tax
- Initiative 2117, Prohibiting all state agencies, counties, and cities from implementing any type of carbon tax credit trading [Repeal the Climate Commitment Act (CCA)]
- Initiative 2124, Opting out of Long-Term Services Insurance Program
"Our stance against these initiatives is a reflection of the League’s firm commitment to equitable education funding, climate resilience, and accessible long-term care,” said Mary Coltrane, president of the League of Women Voters of Washington. “We’re safeguarding our state's future with each vote against these regressive measures.”
At its April Board meeting, the Directors voted to contest these proposals for the following reasons, based on League positions adopted by member consensus following studies of the issues.

Learn More | Study Now Available as a Free PDF Download Between 2005 and 2020, one quarter of the nation’s newspapers closed, leaving 1,800 communities with no local news outlet.At the 2021 LWVWA convention, delegates authorized a study of the decline of local news in Washington to support League development of a policy position. The charge of the study committee was to evaluate the condition of news outlets in Washington. The task was not to present solutions. Rather it was to provide information to make readers aware of the significance of the issue with a goal of reaching consensus on a League policy. Learn More |

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization. We encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government. The League acts in support of, or in opposition to, selected governmental issues that its members have studied. It does not support or oppose candidates, factions, or political parties. League members, as individuals, may support candidates of the political party of their choice. In order to protect the League's nonpartisanship policy, guidelines regarding the political activities of the Board of Directors are reviewed frequently.
